Back in June of 2010 when I started seeing some pretty awesome results of adopting a healthy lifestyle that included resistance training, cardiovascular training and proper nutrition, I started thinking about helping others achieve those same goals. Tom Cahalan, a good friend of mine from college, had opted out of his manufacturing business in northern Ohio to become a personal trainer. He wanted to help others, especially kids and older adults. I thought, “What an awesome idea, helping others get fit and turn their lives around.”
So, I started talking with personal trainers and staff members at the Westfield, Indiana gym where I belong. I got a lot of good advice. I then started researching organizations that offered certification programs. I narrowed my list down to three from about 20 and eventually chose the American Council on Exercise. I know several trainers who became certified through ACE. It is considered a very thorough and tough program. Roughly 65 percent of the people that take the ACE Personal Trainer exam pass it the first time. I like challenges and I didn’t want to become certified by some fly-by-night organization. Here’s some information about ACE from their website…
Founded in 1985, the American Council on Exercise® (ACE ®) is a nonprofit organization committed to America’s health and wellbeing. Over the past 25 years, we have become an established resource for both fitness professionals and consumers, providing comprehensive, unbiased, scientific research impacting the fitness industry and validating ourselves as the country’s trusted authority on fitness.
Today, ACE is the largest nonprofit fitness certification, education and training organization in the world with nearly 50,000 certified professionals who hold more than 55,000 ACE certifications. With a long heritage in certification, education, training and public outreach, we are among the most respected fitness organizations in the industry and a resource consumers have come to trust for health and fitness education.
So, I ordered the study materials which included some very large and intimidating manuals, DVDs, CD-Roms, study guides and a host of other training vehicles available online. I admit that when I first opened the manual and started looking at the review questions, I doubted my ability to tackle this audacious goal. But, I dug in and followed their study program.
Jump ahead six months and I successfully passed the hardest exam I have ever taken. And now, I am proud to be an ACE-certified Personal Trainer. I have learned more about health and fitness than I ever thought I would. Most importantly, I now know how amazing the human body is and that if we all just take a little time and effort to properly maintain it, we can live healthy and happy lives.
I’m now working to educate others reach their health and fitness goals with the ongoing support and wealth of resources of a first-class organization.
To your health!
