It’s everywhere.  It’s free – well, most of the time.  And it can help you lose weight.

Water, we’ve been told, is good for us.  But do we really know why?  We know that our body needs it to survive, but do we know other ways that good ol’ H2O can benefit our health?  In a recent article in the IDEA Fitness Journal, there is evidence showing how much it can help those of us trying to lose weight.  And trust me, some of us need all the help we can get.

The article in the November-December 2010 issue of IDEA Fitness Journal talks about a study led by Brenda Davy, PhD. RD, associate professor in the department of human nutrition, foods and exercise at Virginia Tech.  The study was presented last August at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemistry Society.

The nuts and bolts of the study is that subjects, aged 55-75 years, were divided into two groups.  One group drank two cups of water prior to their meals and the other did not.  Both groups followed a low-calorie diet.  Over 12 weeks, the non-water-drinkers lost about 11 lbs.  The water drinkers, on the other hand, lost an average of nearly 16 lbs.  Those that drank water right before a meal ate 75-90 fewer calories during that meal. 

Think about it… if you eat three square meals per day and eat 90 fewer calories per meal, that’s 270 calories per day or nearly 1,900 calories a week you are saving.  That’s one extra pound lost about every 12 days.  Hey, every little bit helps, right?

The reason this happens is that we fill the stomach up with sugar-free, zero-calorie substance that sends signals to our brain telling us quicker that we are full. We stop eating sooner.  So, the next time you get ready to sit down to dinner, grab a glass of water and start chugging.  It’s just one more tool that will help you reach your weight loss goals even faster.
