I am not a former college athlete, a body builder, or “gym rat”. I’m just an “average Joe” that has struggled with my weight and health since turning the “Big 4-0″ in 2002. I turned 50 in December of 2012 and am in the best shape of my life!
Here’s my personal fitness story…
I’m married and have three kids, a dog and a cat. I’ve worked in the corporate world and have owned my own businesses. I have many of the same, everyday worries and stresses in life as everyone else – and then some. I recently learned, however, that I can reduce the stress, reverse or minimize health problems, and be happier by focusing on getting (and staying) fit.
In March of 2010, I embarrassingly reached my peak weight at 210 lbs. At 5’4” tall, the excess weight and increased body fat (36%) was affecting my health by putting me at risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, sleep apnea, muscle loss, and more. After seeing a picture of myself at my heaviest weight, I visited my endocrinologist who told me I needed to implement both an exercise and nutrition plan to get healthy or else face severe health problems. The next day, I joined a fitness center, hired a personal trainer, and committed to working out six days a week, as well as making better nutritional choices.
In just six months, I lost more than 40 lbs. of fat and gained nearly 10 lbs. of lean muscle. I decreased my body fat percentage to 23% and diminished or eliminated many of the my looming health problems. Both my strength and cardiovascular health have also greatly improved. I’ve also reduced or eliminated nearly all of my medications and no longer need a C-PAP machine for sleep apnea. My family appreciates the fact that I don’t snore very often, if at all!
As a result of my accomplishments, I was compelled to help others make positive health changes. I began pursuing a personal training certification through the American Council on Exercise (ACE). After completing more than four months of intense study and gaining practical, hands-on training experience during that time while working at a fitness facility, I earned my certification. I am now helping others by equipping them with the tools and knowledge they need to get healthy by following the ACE Integrated Fitness Training™ (IFT™) model which provides an innovative, systematic and comprehensive approach to achieve real results. Integrating assessments and programs to facilitate rapport, adherence, self-efficacy and behavior change, the model provides the blueprint for personal trainers to design exercise programs that improve posture, movement, flexibility, balance, core function, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular endurance and strength for all clients.
In August of 2011, I successfully earned my U.S. Military-endorsed civilian boot camp certification through Sgt. Ken Weichert’s Operation Fit to Fight program. Ken Weichert (a.k.a. “SGT Ken”) is a Six-time Soldier of the Year, Master Fitness Trainer for the U.S. Army National Guard and veteran of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Desert Storm.
On August 10, 2012 I will have completed my WKC (World Kettlebell Club) personal trainer certification through Sean Armstead, a former Marine Corps Captain, AKC Master Kettlebell Instructor and owner of Phenomenal Fitness in Chicago.
In April of 2013, I successfully completed my Youth Fitness Specialist certification through the International Youth Conditioning Association. This certification allows me to effectively work this children ages 2-18, teaching them developmentally-appropriate exercise and fitness skills while preparing them for participation in sports and other recreational activities that require speed, strength, power and agility.
